Here is the proof

You Are 50% Weird

Normal enough to know that you're weird...
But too damn weird to do anything about it!

Now I thought I was weirder LOL

No photos today as I need to charge the batteries on my camera.
I have had a busy week all in all . Last Thursday I went to see Jenny and I met her friend Carol also. I met Jenny through a Yahoo group and she does the most amazing felt work (check out her site ) and she kindly invited me down. We had a lovely morning of spinning and then in the afternoon she was teaching me to felt 'oh boy ' I think I am may have yet another addiction coming up. I so enjoyed the day and it was great for me ,as I have no one up here I can invite over for a 'crafty' chat . Both Jenny and Carol have a wealth of talent and I felt so at home and welcomed and have been invited back to make a felted handbag , yipee !! Isn't it wonderful to meet folks who are like minded and willing to share their knowledge :I call it, the university of life and the only one I have attended.

Kath came over on Saturday evening without Emily but I will let her tell you the reason why ; but I think she went home yesterday a very happy bunny :). It was all go over the weekend as my son and his girlfriend turned up Sunday un-announced (as they do LOL ) so we had a full house and it was lovely to have my children together. Just as well I am an inventive cook !!.

Yesterday before Kath left we had our first try at dyeing and I used the Easy Peasy ones to start with and so I have some lovely lavender yarn to make a shawl with and Kath has some yummy sea green. On the knitting front I haven't had time to sit much but I am on the last sleeve so fingers crossed it will be finished in time for DH birthday.

Oh Dear

Well I went to Colinette today and I was truly only going to be polite , as Kath was going with Lil and it would be rude not to go with them now wouldn't it ? !! Also I did need some odd bits to match up with a couple of items that needed finishing so why not I thought !!! Big mistake. Yes I managed to get the three hanks to match the three unfinished items I needed plus two others to try and use up that load of Silky Chic I have in my stash;but why did I buy some Tagliatelli to make a jumper ?

Also I meant to buy the Parisienne pattern book the last time I was there as I have some kid mohair in my stash I thought I could use . So why did I buy some of their yummy kid mohair in Tapis ?

All I can say is , take three women throw them in a room full of yummy yarns and have some very friendly , helpful staff there and what can you expect ? We went in spent a fortune between us, came out had a picnic went back and bought more.
Thanks Diane for putting up with us ; I enjoyed our chat re wool , fleece , spinning etc and I am so glad I am not the only hoarder:).

Oh and I haven't taken photos of the yarn bargains Kath gave me; my camera's batteries gave up (do you think its trying to tell me something ? )

I have decided that I really need to hibernate for winter , without internet access and without a telephone and then I might, just might get some of my stash knitted

Update on my Spinning and WIP

I went to my local SWD Guild yesterday for my second visit and took along my new wheel. My spinning had improved a lot from my first attempts and I could spin it evenly but I still was not happy as I wanted to spin it finer. I had been using that fleece I bought off E-bay and even after carding it was not easy. I am so glad that I have joined this guild as everyone is so friendly and helpful and they never make you feel like the 'dunce' in the class; one lady in particular has been
great and she gave me more pointers and info re drafting and the difference between worsted and woollen and after a few tries it clicked and I am now able to spin fine enough for at least plying to a 4ply yarn which I am excited about to say the least and that was still using the rough fleece, which as Rita said if I have spun that fine, I can spin anything ;) . So I came home and had a play with some of my Wensledale Long wool which is like silk and a dream to spin and then I tried spinning some dyed Lleyn fleece I had bought at Trefriw and that was fun as the colours blend and change as I spin it. I had intended to use this fleece for felted Xmas gifts but am so enjoying spinning it I shall continue and knit something up with it as it is very soft but I am spinning it a tad thicker as I will be making hats or gloves so I am guessing by the twist that it will knit as DK.

So now I have loads of spinning I want to do using various fleeces etc that I have bought and of course I want to dye them. So today I have ordered acid dyes from Kemtex. I had been told about some dyes called 'Easy Peasy' but Winghams reckoned that they worked out more expensive and using the ones I have bought should give me a larger range of colours. To say I am hooked is an understatement, I am having so much fun.
Also at our meeting I made some good contacts for good quality fleeces , no more buying sight unseen for me again I have learnt the hard way and also met with this lovely couple who bred sheep for their fleece and own several wheels, looms etc and have a wheel for sale which hopefully will suit Kath. We are planning a trip to see them for Kath to try before she buys and choose some fleece.

All this spinning is cutting into my knitting time and I have SO much to do . My main WIP is a jumper for DH Birthday which is on Nov 4th and it done in soft merino in a shade called Terracota. The pattern is from Knitty and its called Lucky very appropriate for me at this moment . Just hope he likes it ; we went through loads of patterns before he decided he liked this one

Oh my I have been tagged !!!

What a surprise I have been tagged by Cherry to consider five things feminism has done for me .This is a subject that is both hard and revealing for me to answer as it has played a large role in my life ;but here goes.....

1) I was brought up the 'old fashioned way' being the only girl with four brothers and they NEVER did any housework EVER ,so I was 'istitutionolized' from an early age to think that women were there to look after men.So for me to have a husband (this is my second marriage ) who not only does as much as I do around the house but sometimes more, was initially a surprise but now I see the female /male relationship as a partnership and I don't feel guilty any more if the ironing hasn't been done or the house isn't as clean as it should be;I do what I can as he does.

2) I certainly felt empowered when I took up a challenging full time career after many years of being a stay at home Mum (something which I loved and have no regrets about and am proud of my children)

3) I have the freedom of voice and ownership. When I was in Turkey about 10 yrs ago I met up with a Welsh girl who had married a Turkish man and moved out there and I was shocked to see how little rights and status she had in her marriage . It makes me shiver to think that women still live like this in parts of the world and indeed in this country.

4) I am confident in myself as a woman and feel equal to men in the sense that I have the same rights although we are very different in many ways 'Vive la difference'

5) Being a feminist to me is not a way of looking down or fighting back against men which I have seen some women do but for me it means, freedom and equality in all things.

Well I could have gone into more detail but have tried to keep it short . Now WHO do I tag ? .........

I tag Kath, Bernie , Kendra , Claire

Sorry folks but you have been tagged

Think I need a dummy, or maybe I am one ?

I loathe having my photo taken , always have but here goes !! Some photos of my latest FO

Ella 2 , in all her Autumn Glory I love this one as I am an Autumn girl .

Another hat from Colinette yarn, modelled by .........'the prat in the hat ' !!

Last but not least another Colinette jumper finished. I love the colour of this Giotto di Oro in 'Jay' and also the sleeve detail , very goth, but why, oh why are Colinette making their jumper patterns so short these days . I know I have a long body so I did do it longer , hence the need for another skein but even so it is still a tad short ; guess its called 'fashion' and I'm getting too old !!

Oh and have you seen the latest copy of 'Simply Knitting' ? I subscribed to it for a year and this is , I think, my last copy and in my opinion one of the best out of them all; I haven't been that impressed with it generally. Love the wrap cardi and the cable jumper and other goodies included a Rowan booklet and a calendar WITH patterns , how good is that ?

A woolly wandering holiday

We had a fabulous holiday and I really don't know were to begin to tell you all about it.Maybe at the beginning !! We sat in the fully loaded van and we knew we wanted to go to Wingham Wools on our way back home but apart from that no idea !! So we flipped a coin as to go North or South, and we got North and then another for East or West ,and we got East. So we ambled along , stopping a night here and there & then on to Leyburn where there was a Farmers Market going on so of course we stopped for goodies and I started chatting to a lovely elderly couple and admired their woollies (as you do !! )and they said they came to Leyburn every year at this time and their woollies were made locally out of Wensleydale yarn and it was sold in a shop nearby. We had stayed on a farm in the area before and had booked there for a couple of nights and low and behold our hosts were great friends of the owner of this shop and it was this Sheep Shop. So of course I HAD to go, and I spent a lovely few hours there and the lady was called Anne (she is one of the owners )and couldn't have been more helpful. If you are ever in the area I recommend you go and pay them a visit.
So there, I bought some 4ply and a couple of patterns but I am not totally sure if I will make either. I think the lacey one might be a bit granny-ish ? Okay I am one , but still !! Kath says she liked both but I will have a look to see if another pattern appeals to me more.Love the colour though.

Of course I had to by some fleece ; its amazing how long the fleece is . I nearly bought a whole unclean fleece but decided that I would treat myself to some combed clean tops and just a little bag of washed fleece . They do mail order so I will definitely buy more fleece off them in time.

We then went on to Whitby as it's another area we love and we had the wettest day of our hols ; so wet that we said if it rained the next day we would move on. I needed a new waterproof coat as mine was letting the rain in,so Tony bought me one of those long riding type ones which I love and have been after for a while. Well that must have done the trick as the next day was glorious and we awoke with a stunning view from our van overlooking Whitby , a total surprise as we had arrived in such a bad mist we couldn't even see the fence in front of us. We had a lovely day wandering around Whitby where I went on someone's recommendation ;-) to here Bobbins

There were a lot of yummy yarns there , a LOT of Colinette which of course I didn't bother looking at as I live so near their mill, so I bought some Rowan Tapestry but they didn't have a copy of the Rowan book so I will have to find that else where to knit it to the pattern I want . After buying the Rowan I then saw some of the new Sirdar yarn which is called Sublime and boy it is and so soft. I was half wishing I had bought that instead and they had some lovely classy patterns to go with it also but I resisted as I knew there was one other thing I had in mind to buy.

So on we went after spending a lovely few days in and around Whitby ,walking and just relaxing. We decided to go to Wingham Wool Work a day or so earlier than planned to check out their wheels. I had been offered a couple of second hand Traditional ones but I really wanted a Traveller as it would be so much easier to take to Guild meetings etc . I had to make an appointment to see them as they are only open to the public on Sunday and Monday so we had the full tour and the place to ourselves. What an amazing place, sheer heaven for any one into spinning, felting etc I have never seen so many different types of fleece in one place . There was a shed full of natural fleeces , a shed full of dyed fleeces and a shed full of rainbow dyed . They showed us the carding room and other stuff which they normally can't show as when they are open its sheer bedlam there, which I can believe as the sheds are packed with so much stuff there is no room to move . You pick what fleece you want , weigh it and label it and take it to the till where they then check it. I really had to stop myself from just jumping in until we had been able to strike a deal re buying a wheel . Oh and I nearly forgot you can try and spin a small sample of your chosen fleece there before you decide which one you want to buy . So we finally got to see the wheels and the Kromski's did look good and Alan was full of praise for them also but it was a smaller wheel again but I did try both before keeping to my original choice of an Ashford Traveller. I was just so excited and we came out laden with a wheel , a separate Lazy Kate (a Krosmski one as they didn't rate the Ashford one )I know the Traveller already has one but they reckon this works better , we'll see. A Kromski Niddy Noddy , a pair of small hand carders , a bag of white Bluefaced Leicter, a small bag of Black Welsh (out of loyalty ) and a small bag of soya fiber.
I can't praise Ruth and Alan enough and I learnt so much in the few hours we were there and I will be back in the very near future. Check them out if you are going to Ali Pali as they will be there as well as the Sheep Shop I think.
We then drove to a farm near Buxton that we stayed at before and that afternoon set about putting the wheel together only to find that we were missing two parts, the tension knob and the adjusting knob. I was near to tears as I was tired and emotional by now but we phoned and spoke to Ruth and she said it was very unusual for there to be any missing parts and I thought 'why me? ' . She said she would speak to their supplier and took my address and said she would be in touch. So I went to bed not a very happy bunny. I had this lovely wheel which we had finished putting together but couldn't use.
We carried on with our holiday and I was determined not to let it get me down; its amazing how things like this can still get to me, stupid I know , wish I could handle things better and not get so upset.
Well we eventually came home after stopping a night at Kath and Barry's and Emily seemed to have changed again ; she truly is a joy to us all and we had such fun with her. Surprise, surprise when we arrived home amongst all of the mail was a parcel from Wingham's and a starter kit to get me going until they get the proper lacquered parts to send to me; I was over the moon and was so grateful to them. It restores your faith in folks when things like this happen. So I have been spinning , spinning, spinning and I love my wheel ; she is smooth, she is quiet and my spinning is getting so much better . I guess that's the difference after using a battered old one to having a new one; not that I am against a second hand one as I was able to spin on the other and to be fair with all that was going on before we went away I didn't get much spinning done on it and also I have now learnt how important it is to get the fleece well prepared before spinning and getting the draft right.

Well blogger is playing up with me at the moment. I wrote this post two days ago and tried adding more photos but it won't let me for some reason . I have FO to show also. I have finished Ella 2 but I have had a clitch with my Colinette jumper. The BLUE one, told you I am doomed with anything blue I knit !! I am running out of yarn to finish the hood,so I phoned Colinette and I was in luck they had one last skein of it (it's a one off yarn they made and only sold in the shop )So I will frog a bit of it and hope it blends otherwise I will end up with a funky , stripey hood LOL . Must try and catch up with all you bloggers soon too, not enough hours in the day .
